General Awareness Online Training This program covers DOT, IATA, and IMDG General Awareness topics. It also covers DOT required safety training as it relates to the use of the North American Emergency Response Guide (an online copy of the guide is included). There is a separate module that covers DOT hazmat Security Training. Will this meet all my DOT training requirements? The US DOT Requires the following training for all hazmat employees: General Awareness Training Safety Training Hazmat Security Training Function Specific Training This training will take care of all the general awareness training requirements. As for safety training; this program will teach you how to use the North American Emergency Response Guidebook. In many cases there will be additional OSHA training requirements (separate from DOT) that are relevant in your workplace. This program will meet all of your hazmat security general awareness requirements if you are not one of the companies required to file a written security plan. Driver Training Limitations Many companies train their drivers only at a general awareness level. Is this acceptable? Probably not. But many companies do it anyway because they feel that some training is better than nothing. Realistically a two to three day course is required to ensure that drivers are trained at level where they can read and interpret the regulations to ensure a shipment is packaged, marked and labeled correctly. For example knowing that a 1A1 steel drum is authorized for certain PG II liquids where a UN 1A2 steel drum is not, is beyond the scope of most awareness programs. If dispatch or the drivers management ensures that the driver has a precise checklist of what to look for for that particular shipment, then less training is needed because they aren't making any independent judgment calls -- they're just following instructions. You can purchase a full DOT Hazmat Function Specific training program from us for $50 dollars plus $10 shipping and handling.. Please call or e-mail Jim Powell if you have any questions.
